about

One winter, many years ago, GurdyBird was part of the crew aboard a frigate named the "Pandora". This vessel was woefully and relentlessly plagued by ill fortune. After many months of being on a fruitless voyage they found themselves in chilly and uncharted waters, with no wind to fill the sails. The compasses did naught but spin frantically on their dials and no stars had been visible for weeks. Things were feeling on the dark side of bleak as the cold broke forth into misery and hunger due to port not being made as yet, and no ships had been seen for a worryingly long time.

One night, where the chill seemed particularly biting and where the most hardened sailor seemed most meek and suddenly pious, the crew muttered prayers to whomever they could think of, even to the sea itself for relief from this fate.

Then a thick mist rolled in.

Frustration now set in as the crew approached the port side of the frigate, desperate to see a break. What they saw was the starboard of a vessel with an eerie luminescence, almost grinding sides with they. The crew of this vessel also glowed and moved in such a manner of grace that the Pandora's crew could see just how wretched they, themselves, had become.

A board came from this mysterious ship to the Pandora and this otherworldly crew were coming aboard, carrying crates and barrels of food, rum and wine. The Pandora's crew looked on in surprise and gratefulness, their offers to help or requests for information were turned down with beaming smiles only and a wave of hands. They spoke a language not heard by anyone on board and they used signs to let the crew know that these were gifts. The Captain asked if they would look at their tools for navigation. The Captain of this ship tapped the glass of the compass and indicated their whereabouts on the map, which puzzled the Captain as the map he used was the most recent drawn out by any cartographer.

The mist was starting to clear as the light wearing crew of other ship were climbing back aboard their own vessel, and they waved as they pulled the plank back up and sailed away, making no ripples in the water and not appearing on the horizon when the fog was gone.

GurdyBird saw that the flag of this ship were two hands in handshake. One had wings on the wrist and the other had fish tails, and the name of this vessel was "Shchedryk", later found to be Ukranian for "Bountiful Evening". And this is the tune in honour of the kindness of the crew of that ship of good beings, some of the Pandora's crew believing them to be sea spirits, ghosts, angels or otherworldly agents not previously known about.

The ship was also now free from misfortune, and sailed many a successful voyage, and endeavoured to pass on kindness where it found need.
