JENNYBELLS - During a strange time and languishing in the flat and windless doldrums of 2020, GurdyBird is aboard the good ship JennyBells, and as we all felt, finds herself between the Seas of Coping and the Ocean of the God Save Us All.

This tune is the first in a new project of reworking traditional tunes for my non-stage work, and is constructed from a deconstruction and reimagining of two traditional tunes: popular jig, "Jenny Pluck Pears" published by Playford in the 1600s and a Renaissance Carol "All Bells in Paradise/Down in Yon Forest". These tunes share similar phrases and I felt like that they would work together, as well as represent the anxieties and coping mechanisms that I, by no means alone, experienced over the past few years, bereavement, illness, pandemic, lack of sleep, working and volunteering throughout, included.
